On October 14, 2026, a high-level event dedicated to the future of psychiatric research and innovation will be held at the European Parliament in Brussels. The event is organized at the initiative of Member of the European Parliament Tilly Metz and Marion Leboyer, Scientific Director of the PROPSY Priority Research Program and Equipment (PEPR PROPSY). It will bring together policymakers, researchers, clinicians, patient representatives, and mental health stakeholders to promote an ambitious European strategy aimed at accelerating research and improving access to innovation in psychiatry.
A European Ambition for Mental Health
Mental disorders are among the leading causes of disability across Europe and represent a major challenge for healthcare systems. While advances in precision psychiatry are creating new diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities, their implementation continues to be hindered by fragmented research policies, regulatory frameworks, and assessment systems across EU Member States.
This meeting aims to develop a shared vision that will strengthen European collaboration, facilitate the translation of scientific innovation into clinical practice, and accelerate patient access to the benefits of these advances.
A Program Bringing Together Europe’s Leading Stakeholders
Throughout the day, discussions will feature perspectives from key stakeholders across the mental health community, including:
- patient and family representatives;
- leading researchers in precision psychiatry;
- psychiatrists and healthcare systems experts;
- public health specialists; and
- European policymakers.
Expected speakers include Åsa Konradsson Geuken (EUFAMI), Martien Kas (ECNP), Laurent Boyer, Albino Oliveira-Maia, and Marion Leboyer, who will present perspectives on developing a European roadmap for precision psychiatry.
Concrete Objectives
Discussions will focus on:
- advancing precision psychiatry across Europe;
- improving patient access to innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches;
- strengthening collaboration among researchers, clinicians, patient organizations, and public decision-makers;
- reducing inequalities in access to mental healthcare; and
- defining a coordinated European strategy for mental health research.
The event is expected to help identify the main barriers to innovation in psychiatry and lay the groundwork for a future European roadmap—and potentially a Brussels Declaration on Mental Health Research.
