A United Europe for Psychiatry: From Research to Care
A United Europe Advancing Precision Psychiatry

On October 14, 2026, the European Parliament in Brussels opened its doors on the conference “A United Europe for Psychiatry: From Research to Care,” organized by PEPR PROPSY.

Hosted by Member of the European Parliament Tilly Metz and led by Professor Marion Leboyer, Scientific Director of PEPR PROPSY, the event brought together researchers, healthcare professionals, advocates with lived experience, and European policymakers to explore how stronger collaboration can accelerate research and innovation in psychiatry across Europe.

Addressing a Major Public Health Challenge

Mental health disorders affect nearly 80 million people across Europe. Although European psychiatric research is internationally recognized, scientific advances still too often fail to reach people with lived experience in a timely manner. Differences in research policies, national regulatory frameworks, and reimbursement systems for innovative diagnostics and treatments continue to slow their adoption into clinical practice.

Against this backdrop, the conference aimed to foster dialogue among all key stakeholders to identify practical ways to strengthen European coordination—from research and innovation to psychiatric care.

Bringing Together Europe’s Leading Stakeholders

Throughout the afternoon, internationally recognized experts shared their perspectives on the future of psychiatry in Europe, including leading researchers, representatives of European scientific organizations, and leaders from organizations representing people with lived experience and their families.

Their participation reflected a shared commitment to strengthening collaboration between research, clinical practice, organizations, and European institutions.

Building a European Strategy for Precision Psychiatry

Beyond scientific discussion, the conference sought to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive European strategy for psychiatry. Key priorities included establishing a more coordinated European research network, harmonizing the evaluation and reimbursement of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, and ensuring that people with lived experience and their families play a stronger role in setting research priorities.

The meeting may culminate in the adoption of a “Brussels Declaration for Psychiatric Research,” providing a shared roadmap for advancing psychiatric research and positioning Europe as a global leader in precision psychiatry.
